瑞典皇家科學院指出，2位得主對證明微中子會變換型態的相關實驗有重大貢獻，而微中子變換型態先決條件是具有質量。他們的發現改變了人類對於物質最內部運作方式的瞭解，且證實對人類宇宙觀具關鍵意義。「微中子」（neutrino）字面意思是「微小的電中性粒子」。其具有3種型態，最常見的是電子微中子，其他兩種則是緲子微中子和τ微中子。微中子振盪是一個量子力學現象，也就是特定型態的某一微中子可以轉變為不同型態的微中子。梶田隆章發現它會轉型清華大學物理系教授張達文《隱形微中子之超級變身術》一文指出，地球上最大的自然微中子來源是高掛在天空的太陽。另一主要的自然微中子來源，是宇宙射線打到地球外層的大氣層製造出無數粒子，其中包含微中子。過去物理學家受「太陽微中子問題」困惑了數十年。物理學家們在地球量測發現，與依據標準太陽模型的理論預測值兩相比較，微中子數量約短少2/3。而2項關鍵實驗發現，微中子其實不是像表面看來那樣消失了，只是變換了型態。在本世紀即將開始之際，梶田隆章運用日本東京大學的「超級神岡探測器」，發現微中子從地球大氣層來到探測器的過程中會轉換型態。麥唐納測到太陽微中子與此同時，麥唐納領導的加拿大研究團隊運用薩德伯里微中子觀測站，探測到太陽發出全部3種微中子，證實了太陽微中子在達到地球途中發生轉換，3種微中子的總流量與標準太陽模型的預言相符合，基本上對「太陽微中子問題」提出了解答。對於粒子物理學來說，這是歷史性的發現。張達文的文章指出，在不久前粒子物理的標準模型中，微中子是不能有質量的，因此微中子振盪的發現迫使物理學家修正這個標準模型。這是標準模型30年間的最大修正，但是修正的方向還有待進行中的微中子實驗來闡明。(中國時報)，
